New Mexico Dental Implants

At our dental office we perform oral surgery to place and restore dental implants. These modern, natural replacements for dentures, partial dentures, and bridges give our patients a new sense of confidence, improve their bite, and help protect the vulnerable gaps made by missing teeth. As implants dentists in Albuquerque, we know how much your oral health can improve with dental implants.

What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants consist of titanium screws that replicate a natural dental root. A porcelain crown is then affixed to an “abutment” which is attached to the implant. This serves as a prosthetic tooth. Dental implants are often suggested when you have suffered maxillofacial trauma, would like an alternative to removable dentures or you are missing teeth.

Dental implants can also be used in conjunction with dentures and bridges. Dentures and bridges can be attached to abutments for a more secure fit. Since implants are permanent fixtures they often give our patients a sense of more control over their dental health.

What Can I Expect from an Implant Procedure?
Before we can place dental implants, the tooth (or teeth) in question must be extracted. If we performed the extraction and you have insufficient bone to accommodate a dental implant, we will place an immediate particulate bone graft before placing the fixtures that your prosthetic tooth will later attach to. After this step, you will need 4-6 months to wait for the socket and the bone graft to heal. Once the site has healed, we then place the implant into the bone and let that osseointegrate (i.e., fuse with the bone) for a period of 3-6 months depending on the location in the mouth.

Once the implant has integrated into the bone, we can affix the abutment to the implant which enables us to then attach a crown, bridge or denture. Placing implants is generally not a very painful procedure. The pain associated with surgically placing the implant is usually much less than the pain associated with extracting the tooth. Patients sometimes take one pain pill after the procedure if any at all. At our dental office, we make use of nitrous oxide/laughing gas to help alleviate the anxiety and nervousness associated with oral surgery procedures. The next day, most patients are able to go back to work, exercise, and resume their normal activities.
